CORNWALL, Ontario – The owner of the Cornwall River Kings says his team has an improved record, work ethic and outlook. It’s only missing one thing if it wants to finish the season.
Fans.
“We need people at the games, it’s disheartening to see less than 1,000 fans at a game,” said owner Steve Moreau. “With these numbers, we won’t last the rest of the season and it would be devastating to lose this team.”
“It’s simple: No fans, no team.”
Despite a rash of recent injuries, the River Kings play has improved of late. Particularly on home ice, where Cornwall is 3-2-2 in its last seven LNAH contests.
“The team has improved a lot since the beginning of the year,” said Moreau. “We’ve made some changes and the last seven games or so, have shown the results.”
Now, Moreau hopes to see a spike in attendance. The River Kings have earned points in each of their last three home games but in front of crowds of only 671, 901 and 792. At the mid-way point of the home schedule, Cornwall has averaged 880 fans.
Cornwall hosts the Laval Predateurs on Saturday night (7:30 p.m.) at the Civic Complex. The following afternoon, the River Kings take on the Trois-Rivieres Blizzard. The puck drops at 3 p.m.
The first 250 fans on Saturday night will receive a free River Kings foam puck. There will also be a free raffle for a 32” LCD television.
On Sunday, the River Kings will welcome Initiation Program hockey players (ages 4-6) from Cornwall, Long Sault and Char-Lan. After the game, fans are invited to come out onto the ice and skate with the River Kings. There will be photo and autograph opportunities as well.
