On Friday, November 27 MP Mr. Guy Lauzon and MPP Mr. Jim Brownell along with South Glengarry Mayor Jim McDonell and South Glengarry Council members gathered to help celebrate the upgrades of South Service Road with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

The Township of South Glengarry has upgraded and improved an 11.6 kilometer section of South Service Road from County Road 34 (Highway 2), Lancaster to County Road 23, Curry Hill. Also, two bridges at Westley’s Creek and Sutherland Creek have been rehabilitated and guard rails have been installed to improve safety at four box culvert locations.

In total, the project cost 3.9 million dollars, of which, 2.6 million dollars came from the Provincial and Federal Governments. “The completion of this project is a perfect example of the good things that can be achieved when all levels of government work together,” said Jim Brownell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. “This will be a great benefit to the automobile traffic in the area, as well as provide a safe and healthy option for travelers and bicyclists.”

Reconstruction of South Service Road includes a 3.5 metre lane, a 2 metre wide paved shoulder, and a metre wide granular shoulder and rounding. The paved shoulder acts as a bike/walking path, which connects the upgraded section of South Service Road with the Waterfront Trail System.

The upgrades address a gap that existed on the 900 kilometer Waterfront Trail System, which runs from Niagara-on-the-Lake to the Quebec border along the shores of Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence River. Visit www.waterfronttrail.org to learn more about the Waterfront Trail system. “Having this section of South Service Road as part of the Water Front Trail system will really help put South Glengarry on the map,” said South Glengarry Mayor Jim McDonell. “I’m certain that anyone who travels along the section of South Service Road will be impressed with South Glengarry’s contribution to the Waterfront Trail System.”
