The City of Cornwall is pleased to announce the first-ever recipient of its medical scholarship, Vanessa Carter. Mayor Bob Kilger announced that Ms. Carter has been selected by the scholarship committee to be awarded the academic scholarship of $25,000 per academic year totalling $150,000.
“I am both pleased and proud to make this announcement on behalf of City Council,” stated Kilger. “Bringing physicians to the city is important to the well-being of all of our citizens and by awarding the scholarship to Ms. Carter, we are helping to ensure the community will be well served by medical professionals.”
Ms. Carter, a lifelong resident of the Cornwall area, is in her first year of medical studies at the University of Ottawa and is a graduate of Castleton State in Poultney Vermont earning degrees in Biology and Health Sciences. An award-winning student, Ms. Carter captured an international student scholarship, earned the Academic Excellence award in Natural Sciences and was named the most noteworthy student in the Castleton State 2008 graduating class.
In addition to her academic aptitude, Ms. Carter is an accomplished athlete. An alumnus of Cornwall Minor Hockey, she played goal for the Castleton State varsity hockey team winning ECAC Division III Goalie of the Year and being named to the division’s second All Conference team in 2007–2008. She is the daughter of Rick and Micheline Carter.
Once she has completed her Family Medicine studies and earns her College of Physicians & Surgeons certification, Ms. Carter will be setting up a full-time family practice in Cornwall.
The medical scholarship was created from a recommendation made by the Mayor’s Task Force for Medical Recruitment. Its purpose is to provide funding opportunities in support of students from Cornwall and SD&G who have been accepted into or, are currently studying medicine at a recognized Canadian university leading to certification in family medicine. In return for the scholarship, the recipient will set up a permanent practice in Cornwall for a period of not less than five years.
