Cornwall Sea Cadets Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Timothy Woodbeck and Petty Officer 2nd Class Devin McDiarmid are among Ontario’s best sea cadet sailing crews, set to converge on Kingston’s Royal Military College of Canada over the June 21 and 22 weekend. The pair, members of Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Stormont, will compete against 38 other sea cadets in the 2008 Ontario Division Sea Cadet Regatta. The two-day event will see crews travel from as far as Timmins, Ottawa, Elliot Lake and Windsor to compete.

A total of 20 two-cadet teams have earned the right to participate in this annual regatta through province-wide competitions held at area “flotilla” levels over the past few months. The top six crews will represent Ontario in the National Sea Cadet Regatta in Kingston in August.

The cadets sail 3.2-metre Marconi-rigged (mainsail and jib) Pirate sailboats according to Canadian Yachting Association rules. The layout of the course challenges the cadets’ boat-handling and racing strategy skills in several relative wind directions. Scoring is much like golf, in which the objective is to accumulate as few points as possible.

The Ontario Division Regatta is the finale of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets’ local sailing training for the year. The Navy League of Canada–Ontario Division conducts the competition with Canadian Forces support through the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Central) at CFB Borden.
