The SD&G-Prescott-Russell-Akwesasne contingent at last week’s Ontario Senior Winter Games, (Winterfest) in Brockville, returned home with a pair of gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze. In prediction skating, Sharon McCullough (Cornwall) won gold in the women’s division, while Jean-Claude Bard (Cornwall) won silver in men’s. Nordic walking replaced nordic skiing at the Games because of poor snow conditions, and Harry Jarrett (Cornwall), John McMartin (Cornwall) and Stanley Fraser (Alexandria) took home gold in the men’s team competition. Fraser also won bronze in the men’s individual competition, and Jacqueline Fraser (Alexandria) won silver in the women’s nordic walk. Finally, in alpine skiing, with competition taking place at Calabogie Peaks, Robert Peladeau (Williamstown) took home silver. SD&G-Prescott-Russell-Akwesasne also competed in hockey, mixed curling, table tennis and women’s volleyball at the biennial provincial winter games. Over 800 seniors from across the province took part in the Games this year, which Brockville hosted for the second straight time. Next year, Brockville will host the 2010 Canada Senior Games.
