Micheline Martel, a teacher at École Sainte-Lucie, is continuing her adventure as a volunteer in Vancouver for the Olympics. “Our work as volunteers has begun. I am working in the main office named VANOC and I have met a lot of people already. I am also working with Mercedes Nichols' mother. Mercedes Nichols will be competing in the half pipe snowboard competition. I now realize the amount of work and determination is needed to get to this level of competition. Competition is fierce. My work is more of the social aspect because I deal with the families. Denis, my husband is working security so his tasks are top secret. He works at the bottom of the ski hills where all access is restricted. The media is also setting up. We went to see the Olympic torch arrive on Friday evening. Steve Padborski, a former olympic skier came down with the flame. It was very moving. It was estimated that 10,000 spectators were there. That represents the same amount of people that had gathered in Cornwall to meet the flame. It was just as moving here as it was in Cornwall. We can't wait for the events to start.” Micheline Martel is pictured above with husband Denis Martel. Submitted photo
