Olympian Jeff Bean will be visiting Cornwall on May 26 to promote the upcoming Olympic Torch Relay as part of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Mr. Bean, a freestyle aerial skier, will be performing aerial tricks on a trampoline that will be set up at Cornwall Square from 12 to 4:30 p.m. The twist? (Pardon the pun.) Mr. Bean will be performing the various aerial manoeuvres while wearing ski boots and skis. “Freestyle skiers train for most of the year indoors on trampolines perfecting their tricks,” said Mr. Bean. “Performing a triple twist and somersault is tricky enough; doing it with skis on is rather spectacular.”

Residents of Cornwall are invited to drop by Cornwall Square and see Mr. Bean perform, free of charge. He will be performing several times over the four and a half hours, with breaks in between to talk to people about the torch relay and sign autographs. Residents will also be provided with the opportunity to register for a chance to carry the torch in December via the RBC and Coke websites. “This is a wonderful opportunity to meet an Olympian and see the Olympic Torch,” said Pam Maloney, co-chair of the local organizing committee. “There are only a few days left to register to carry the torch, and we hope that people take a moment to come downtown and catch a little Olympic spirit.”

Mr. Bean will be bringing the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch with him to Cornwall on May 26. This is the actual Olympic Torch that will be lit in Athens later in the year prior to its journey to Canada. The Torch Relay will wind its way throughout Canada, stopping in Cornwall on Dec. 14 for a special celebration before it continues on its way to Vancouver.

Mr. Bean will also be visiting two Cornwall high schools in the morning of May 26 to speak to the students about his Olympic experience and personal drive for excellence. He will be speaking at La Citadelle and St. Joe’s/General Vanier schools.

Jeff Bean is a three-time Olympian (1998, 2002 and 2006). He spent 11 years on the Canadian National Freestyle Ski Team (Aerials). His career was filled with highlights, including a fourth place at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, a silver medal at the 2005 World Championships, 17 World Cup medals and two national titles. Jeff Bean currently resides in his hometown of Ottawa, Ontario.

The Torch Relay will stop in Cornwall on December 14, 2009. Information about the Cornwall celebration can be found at www.Cornwall.ca/TorchRelay.
