Cornwall Coyotes U-14 Girls came away with the silver medal in the McDonald's Cup in Gatineau over the July 18/19 weekend. Matched up against 7 other teams from Gatineau area, the Coyotes were up to the task, shutting out the competition in the first three games 2-0, 1-0, and 1-0 with goals by Bianca Lemire (2) and Tara Stidwill (2). Backed up by an solid defensive core of Britany Belmore, Michelle Leger, Michelle Brown and Emilie Tessier and backstopped up by steady goaltending from Sarah Robinson, the Coyotes defeated the Hull Arsenal Rouge in the Sunday semi-finals 1-0 on a goal by Bianca Lemire. The final match against the Buckingham Fury proved more difficult as the Fury took an early 1-0 lead. Pressure by the Coyotes was relentless, but they were unable to capitalize, despite several good opportunities in the first half. The Coyotes tied it up early in the 2nd half on a goal by Lindsay McCoy which was quickly countered by the Fury. Despite territorial advantage by the Coyotes, victory eluded them and the Fury won 2-1. The Coyotes won the Silver medal and were also voted the most sportsmanlike team for the tournament. The U-14 Coyotes are coached by Richard Robinson, with assistance by Aris Juijias and Chris Laplante. The U-14 Coyotes Girls now have a record of 2 silver medals in 2 tournaments as they previously won silver in Shawinigan in June.
