Men who have been sexually assaulted walk a hard path. From myths to judgments, there are many blocks on their road to getting better.

The Cornwall Community Hospital Assault and Sexual Abuse Program (ASAP) would like to remind our community that we have a specialized team available to help all males regardless of age who have been sexually assaulted.

For men, it can be very difficult to admit that something like this has happened and then tell someone. The first response that a victim of sexual assault receives is very important. Someone who receives a blaming, critical response has more chance of developing more symptoms that are longer lasting than someone who receives a positive and non-judgmental response.

One way to respond to someone who has told you he was sexually assaulted might be “That is terrible. What do you need right now?” or, “How can I help you?” When the time is right you can offer the services of the ASAP at the hospital, the police and/or other services that might be needed.

The key is to allow this person to make the choices about what is best for him. This can be hard in a time of crisis but supporting someone in making his own decisions begins the journey of taking back the power that was stolen during the assault.

For guys who have been recently assaulted (within the past three days) we have a team of specialized nurses who offer care in a skilled and compassionate manner. This service is offered 24/7 at the Emergency Department at 840 McConnell. Just come in and ask for an ASAP nurse. Given the sensitive nature of these issues, we pay special attention to concerns of safety and confidentiality.

After 72 hours, our program nurse can still offer health care options. Counselling is offered by a bilingual social worker who provides flexible hours in order to accommodate busy schedules.
