Blazers are “world” champions
The Seaway Valley U10 boys’ Blazers are World Champions. On June 6 and 7, the boys entered Ottawa with hopes of becoming gold medal champs at the Ottawa FC Mini World Cup representing USA. They represented our American neighbours with great flare, once again dominating opponents through round-robin play outscoring them 20–1. Entering Sunday, the boys breezed through the semi-finals with a commanding 7–2 win over the Cumberland A team. In the gold medal game the boys faced a tough Catarraqui Team (Spain) who were determined to defeat the Blazers (USA) but the Blazers boys managed to stay even with them throughout the first half thanks to brilliant goal tending by netminder Adam VanEttinger. The determination of the Blazers never let up as they dominated in the second half scoring five unanswered goals to defeat Spain 7–2 earning them a gold medal. At the closing ceremonies, His Excellency Dr. Abraham Sokhaya Nkomo (high commissioner and great humanitarian of South Africa) handed the boys their gold medal and awarded Adam VanEttinger the gold medal game MVP for his extraordinary play. On Monday June 8 The Cumberland Cobras rolled into town with aspirations of defeating our world champions, but were quickly disappointed as the Blazers boys continued their winning ways defeating them 13–0, with a strong Blazers attack lead by excellent ball placement by our Mike Turcotte, and Player of the Week right flanker #9 Aaron Gravelle, who netted three goals in the game.
