Walk for memories
To mark Alzheimer Awareness Month, the Alzheimer Society is asking the community to track the number of steps they take in an effort to raise awareness for the disease. "Whether you’re walking the dog or going to the grocery store, every step counts," says Chantal Bégin Ghanem, public and donor relations coordinator. "Not just the month of January, but anytime." The significance of physical activity and benefits of physical fitness on incidents of dementia was discussed in the recently released Rising Tides study. "The first prevention scenario examines the impact of an intervention that broadly applies evidence that increased physical activity can reduce dementia incidents. The intervention focuses on increasing physical activity by 50% for all Canadians without dementia, over the age of 65, who are already moderately active. This intervention would reduce the number of people diagnosed with dementia." As well this month, the Alzheimer Society will be holding their annual Walk For Memories fundraiser on Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Cornwall Square, beginning at 10 am (registration begins at 9:00). The community is asked to bring in a photo or story of their experience to add to the wall of memories that will be built during the event. For further information, or to register as a team or individually, call 613-932-4914 or visit www.walkformemories.ca. You can also pick up a pledge form at the office located at 812 Pitt St. Organizers are hoping to raise $25,000.
