CORNWALL, Ontario - With March Break right around the corner and so many options to choose from, the task of narrowing it down to just one may seem somewhat daunting for parents.
For girls ages 9-16, Sexual Assault and Support Services (SASS) is offering free March Break Girls Empowerment Camps, which address issues like body image, beauty and self-esteem.
“The focus of these camps is to boost self-esteem and empower young women and girls,” says the group’s Facebook page. “Each camp will be age appropriate and will cover topics such as body image, bullying, self-esteem, and healthy relationships.” The camps will take place at the group’s 123 Amelia Street location. Camp will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.
Boys and Girls Club of SD&G will also be hosting two week-long camps starting Monday, March 13. The Let’s Play! Camp is set to take place at the Benson Centre, featuring a wide variety of sports, games, and positive activities. Kids who appreciate a balance of physical activity and arts and crafts will enjoy the camps taking place at the club’s 506 First Street location. The camps will also be taking two field trips throughout the course of the week.
“We’re also offering free drop-ins to club members at our Henry Street location where the kids can come and hang out,” said Boys and Girls Club communications and marketing co-ordinator Trevor Smith. The camps will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
If your child is interested in science and nature, the St. Lawrence River Institute will also be hosting a week of primarily free activities at the Ontario Power Generation Visitor Centre. “We’ve got a week of exciting things planned for the kids,” said River Institute Communications Specialist, Karen Douglass Cooper.
Kids will experience everything from how to make elephant toothpaste to taking on the role of a biologist for a day as they learn about traps, lures, and bait from a real scientist. Other activities include building bat shelters, learning about invasive species, and nature art.
All programs run from 10:00 a.m. to noon, but participants are encouraged to drop in anytime.
The City of Cornwall is also offering activities during March Break to keep everyone busy. Programs include skating at the Benson Centre, swimming at the Cornwall Aquatic Centre, as well as St. Patrick's Day Arts and Crafts Classes, Zumba Kids with Jasmine and Adele, Pick-up Soccer, Dodgeball, Kick Ball, Stick & Puck Skates and more.
