CORNWALL, Ontario – The competition was fierce at the second annual Celebrity Chopped BBQ, with six local celebs firing up the grill in support of Maison Baldwin House.
The theme of this year’s competition was southern-style barbecue, which contestants integrated into each of their three courses.
Competing for the champion title at this year’s event were Dr. Rachel Navaneelan, Todd Lihou, Coun. Carilyne Hebert, Marc Renaud, Sue Stewart, and Dan Allaire, who was last year’s runner-up chef.
Reflecting on last year’s competition, Allaire said that he’s had to re-evaluate his strategy.
“I’m really just trying to keep it simple,” said Allaire. “So far, I think it’s working out well for me.”
Judging the competition were local culinary experts, Sheep’s Head Bistro’s Lewis Meehan, Peppermills’ Fabien Clement-Lynch, Mike and Roger of Marrow and Spice, and Keitha Fisher.
“We had a great panel of judges last year,” said event organizer, and Maison Baldwin House Executive Director, Debbie Fortier. “We wanted to give other restaurants the opportunity to showcase their chefs, and we’re really excited with our wonderful judges.”
Celebs had the difficult task of creating three complete dishes which incorporated some of Maison Baldwin House’s most commonly donated food items.
“Some of the competitors have gotten really creative with their items,” said Fortier. “And the spirit of competition is really fun. There’s been some Celebrity Chopped smack going on, which we love.”
With Todd Lihou coming in a close second, this year’s Chopped Champion was none other than Coun. Carilyne Hebert.
Celebrity Chopped is Maison Baldwin House’s signature fundraiser of the year, and helps provide support to women in need.
