Students Help Victims
More than 50 high school students from the Upper Canada District School Board showed what it means to care when they travelled stateside to help victims of hurricane-ravaged Louisiana recover their lives. The 52 students, from Tagwi Secondary School and Glengarry District High School, recently travelled on an aid mission to the community of Lake Charles, one of the areas hardest hit when Hurricane Rita cut a swath through the state in September 2005. Working through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and the Southwest Louisiana Disaster Recovery Station, the students helped repair damaged homes and clean up properties (more)

Commemorative Medal Presented
NDP Veterans Affairs Critic Peter Stoffer (Sackville-Eastern Shore) recently was joined by Darlene Jalbert, the NDP candidate for Stormont, Dundas, South Glengarry to present the Russian commemorative medal “60 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945” to Second World War veteran Col. May Show Festival
The sweet sounds of country, bluegrass and gospel music will emanate from Knox Church in Vankleek Hill on Friday night, May 16, as the Vankleek Hill May Show Festival kicks off this year’s festivities with a Notre Dane de Grass concert at 7:30 p.m Canadian Folk Music Award-nominated Notre Dame de Grass is a five-piece bluegrass band specializing in original songs and instrumental material. Songsmith/guitarist Matt Large and composer/banjoist Guy Donis provide the palette for fiddler Heather Schnarr, mandolinist Bob Cussen and bassist Andrew Horton to exhibit their exceptional skill. Art Auction To Fund Bursary
Students from across Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry counties, among others, are donating their artwork for a fundraising auction to be held at General Vanier Intermediate School on Wednesday, May 21. The event is in honour of a much-beloved art teacher, Ian McDougall, whose passing last year inspired the creation of a bursary in his name. He was very respected and loved, explains event organizer, Christine Shaver, of McDougall. The award will be presented in June to a graduating student from Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School who excels in visual art. (more)


Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month
To mark Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) is launching a new advertising campaign to educate Canadians about cystic fibrosis (CF), the most common, fatal, genetic disease affecting young Canadians. Many Canadians do not know what cystic fibrosis is, and if they do, they might not know how devastating the disease can be. The ad campaign, “Drowning on the Inside,” explains that it is what happens on the inside that makes CF so serious. (more)

The Benson Organization is pleased to introduce their new Auto Parts, Performance and Truck Accessories store to Cornwall, which will be open to the public at 1139 Brookdale Ave. “We’ve been selling auto parts across Ontario and Quebec for over thirty years,” said Benson Marketing Manager Denis Lapierre, “but this new store will offer much more than just auto parts. The township of South Glengarry and Bell recently announced yet another significant upgrade to the town’s Internet service in the area of Green Valley. Sympatico Total Internet solution from Bell will be available beginning May 9, 2008. Bell and the municipality have teamed to significantly expand the existing DSL footprint through the Rural Connections program, a government initiative to speed broadband expansion into rural areas of Ontario (more)

The mayor and members of South Stormont Township Council are excited to invite residents of South Stormont to participate in our third annual Community Clean-up Day on Saturday, May 10. Mayor Bryan McGillis stated, “This is a perfect opportunity for residents to work together to clean up our roads, streets and parks.” He further added, “Pitch in and afterward, head to the Long Sault Arena for a barbecued hot dog and your chance to win a prize.” (more)
