CORNWALL, Ontario – Saturday, July 29 was a beautiful day for Cornwall Ribfest. The sun was shining and there was a persistant waft of BBQ in the air.

There was a group however, who wanted to present a different side to this meat fuelled frenzy.

Four members of the Ottawa Animal Defense League (OADL) were outside Ribfest at the Clocktower and as people were walking to get their ribs they were offering information on cruelty to animals and the advantages of veganism.

“We want to make this world a better place for all beings,” said OADL member Michele Thorn. “There is no humane way to consume meat. I ate meat for 27 years and stopped because I didn’t want to hurt other beings anymore.”

The OADL had three members from Ottawa at the protest on Saturday and one member from Cornwall.

They said that they also protested the circus when they performed in Cornwall last month and in 2012.

Thorn explained that they had gotten a fairly positive response from the Ribfest goers.

“We’ve been handing out a lot of leaflets and have found that there are people who are already vegetarian,” she said. “It doesn’t surprise me because this has been the trend we’ve been seeing for awhile.”
