CORNWALL, Ontario – outside the Cornwall Publc Library on Thursday, Aug. 24 was a colourful parade of heirloom tomatoes.
For the second year in a row, All Things Food and Transition Cornwall+ setup their Tasting Summer Tomatoes Exhibition.
“Tomatoes are often the first thing people grow at home,” explained Kat Rendek of All Things Food. “They are in so much of our food. People might not have a large variety of vegetables in their diet, but tomatoes are in everything.”
There were complimentary tomatoe sandwiches made on site thanks to the bread provided by Bread for Dough and the tomatoes provided from Wildrose Organics.
The tomatoes on display on Thursday were all organic, open polinated, raised without pesticides and of course were heirloom tomatoes.
There were over 30 varieties of tomatoes all availble for tasting.
There were also gardening experts who were on site giving tips on things like how to save tomatoe seeds and tips on how to raise tomatoes if you’re just starting out.
“Sometimes less is more and you can easily raise smaller varieties of tomatoes in pots,” said Rendek.
Whether they be red, yellow, orange, green or even purple, tomatoes are a delicious, easy to grow and a staple fruit.
