These past few weeks I’ve been highlighting some of the groups and people who take time out of their schedules during this busy time of the year to help make Christmas happen for those who are less fortunate.
Christmas can be a difficult time of the year for those who are alone, or have fallen on hard financial times, or both. These things become magnified for a child. It is not a child’s fault if they are alone, or cannot afford to have a full Christmas; all that they know is that their friends have a very different holiday experience than they do.
In our community though, for many years, there have been groups dedicated to making Christmas special for kids.
The Children’s Christmas Fund has been around since 1948 and every year, year round, it raises money and resources to make sure that kids don’t go hungry on Christmas.
Each member of the Service Club Council contributes to the Christmas Fund. This year Dr. Navaneelan is donating peanut butter, various businesses are donating Christmas hams.
The Christmas fund has four different menus based on family size and this year they expect to distribute $75, 000 worth of food to 1, 300 families.
Christmas would not be Christmas for any child however without presents. Every year, the Optimist Toy Drive tries to make sure that every child has a toy under their Christmas tree. This year they hope to collect 3, 000 toys to give to 1, 500 children.
Send an unwrapped gift to the Optimist Club of Cornwall by December 14 to help a child have a Christmas this year.
