CORNWALL, Ontario – City council has put its stamp of approval on a plan to build an outdoor exercise area in Lamoureux Park.
Concerns had been raised by the SD and G Historical Society about how the work will impact the property in the park adjacent to the Cornwall Community Museum, but Stephen Alexander, the city’s planning manager, told city councillors Monday night most concerns were allayed following a meeting between all the parties.
Both Rotary clubs in Cornwall are sponsoring the move and paying for the infrastructure.
“Ideas get done when people step up,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement. “Lamoureux Park is a gorgeous spot and we want more and more people in it.
“This just adds to the inventory.”
Initial cost estimates suggest it could be as much as $65,000 for the first phase of the project, which will be borne solely by the Sunrise Rotary Club, and the Rotary Club of Cornwall.
Other Rotary clubs in Canada, including the Whitby chapter, have completed similar projects which include exercise machines built out of heavy steel to withstand the elements.
The exact location of the exercise area will be determined in the weeks to come, though it will likely be close to the splash pad that already exists.
“This will be an excellent addition to the park,” said Coun. Andre Rivette.
