CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall police are scouring the city for a person, social media reports suggest a female, who held up a downtown coffee shop with a handgun.

Cornwall police Const. Dan Cloutier said a coffee shop at the corner of Ninth and Pitt streets in the city was robbed of a quantity of cash at about 5 p.m. on Sunday.

"They brandished a gun," he said, adding the weapon was a handgun. "Then they fled eastbound on Ninth Street."

Social media lit up Sunday evening following the robbery, with many who claimed to have first-hand knowledge of the incident suggesting a woman carried out the theft.

Cloutier said police are continuing to investigate, but are not yet releasing a description of the assailant.

"We'll probably go down that road eventually," said Cloutier. "We're going to follow up on our leads."

No one was injured, he added.

More to come.
