Cornwall cop resigns amid guilty plea in underaged sex case

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall police officer has resigned from the service after pleading guilty to five sex-related offences in Quebec involving a minor.

Pascal Rossignol pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual exploitation and two counts of procuring sexual services from a person under 18 years of age in a Valleyfield court last week.

He resigned as a constable from the Cornwall police service the same day.

Rossignol had been on trial for 10 charges involving sexual offences with persons under the age of 18.

On Oct. 13, 2010 an allegation was made to the Cornwall Community Police who referred the matter to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The SIU determined that the alleged offences occurred in the Province of Québec and subsequently the investigation was referred to the Sûreté du Québec, Professional Standards Division. The charges were laid as a result of a two-year long investigation by Sureté du Quebec’s Professional Standards Bureau.

Rossignol will be sentenced in Valleyfield on Sept. 17.

Rossignol was under paid suspension from his duties as a police officer while awaiting trial.
