Reader-submitted Article :
Are our Children Safe at School?

This is the gate I go through in the morning to drop my children off for school. My girls are 4 and 6 years old. After we kiss and say goodbye they play outside before the bell rings and they go in. There is a teacher out there in the playground watching them but I am not certain how many at any given time. I do know there is upwards to 20-30 kids out there before the bell rings. What is very disturbing is that there is no lock on this gate, and in fact does not even have a latch on it to keep it closed. There are signs on every door that any "visitor" entering must report to the office, but this gate has no signs, no lock, and is open all the time. I have made my concerns known to the school and will wait and see how long or even if anything is done about it. The point is, how many other schools have similar security lapses and how long before someone notices and changes it?

Parents need to be more aware of these things and don't just assume their kids will be safe at school.

Actually this picture is quite outdated (4 years now). The door has a latch, and is locked during the school day. It is only opened by the custodian at the beginning and end of day as a courtesy to the people picking up their children and to those who are in the after school programming. The whole school yard is fenced in and the doors of the school are locked. A visitor must ring a buzzer and the office administrator has a video feed of who is outside.
