College hosts art exhibition

The Marianne van Silfhout Gallery at St. Lawrence College is pleased to present an exhibition by artist Jeannine Robertson. The exhibition, “Guanxi,” will include approximately 40 paintings and sculptures and will be on view from Nov. 17 to Dec. 19. Ms. Robertson will be at the official opening on Friday, Nov. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Jeannine Robertson has pieces in collections across North America, Europe and the Middle East, including Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C., Ankara, Turkey and Tel Aviv, Israel. Her works are also found in the Canadian Museum of Civilization: Ukrainian Art and Ethnicity, and in the Permanent Collection of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour.

Her work in all genres and mediums reflects her tenacity, determination and optimism. She is greatly influenced by architecture and landscapes. From the skyscrapers of New York to the historical beauty of Paris to the shorelines and waterways of Brockville, all figure prominently in her paintings and sculptures. “Each painting and sculpture is a puzzle and a journey, a quest to resolve a problem and reach an understanding or destination,” she says.

Jeannine moved to Ottawa with her family in the early 1960s. She participated in sculpture, painting and welding workshops with James Boyd, Victor Tolgesy, John Sadler and Brodie Shearer. Jeannine owned and operated the Braam Gallery in Ottawa’s Byward Market for 15 years and was a longtime teacher of watercolour at the Ottawa School of Art.

Through all of these busy years Jeannine continued to produce and exhibit her work throughout Canada and Europe. Jeannine spent extended periods of time in New York where she worked in bronze at the Pietrosanto Artists’ Studio, and Paris where she exhibited at the Galerie Herouet in the Maraise District.
