Highway 401 has reopened following a tragic fatal collision early Monday morning, an accident that killed three people including a two-month-old baby from Quebec.
Both eastbound and westbound lanes were opened after 11:30 a.m., having been closed after the crash at around 1 a.m., said police.
A tractor trailer and a van collided west of Iroquois, causing a fire in the eastbound lanes of the highway. Both vehicles came to rest in the south ditch.
Three of the brown Chevy van’s occupants died in the collision. SD&G OPP have identified them as two-month-old Moriah Gloria Warren, Elissa Ried, 22, and Sheila McGlashen, 78.
They were all from Chateauguay, Que.
Three other occupants of the van were rushed to Winchester District Memorial Hospital, and later transfered to Ottawa Civic Hospital. They have serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Sergey Lucin, 44, was sent to Cornwall Community Hospital with minor injuries and has been released.
Both eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway were closed between Cardinal and Morrisburg.
The westbound lane was opened around 9:30 a.m. and one eastbound lane was opened around 11:30 a.m. Crew are currently working to remove the tractor trailer’s load.
OPP and traffic collision investigators are combing the area to determine a cause of the accident.
