UPDATE: Storm batters Cornwall area, trees snapped

CORNWALL, Ontario – A powerful thunderstorm ripped into the Cornwall area Friday evening, with reports coming in of downed branches and snapped trees.

One tree, at a Pescod Avenue home, was snapped at its base, while in other parts of the city branches littered the ground.

There was fear that a tornado may spin its way through the region, though there have been no reports of such powerful weather as of 7 p.m.

Strong winds blew throughout the day Friday, in advance of the storm that struck around 6 p.m.

Environment Canada issued a storm warning, and tornado watch, which ended Friday evening.

At 4:20 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a line of severe thunderstorms extending from southern Lake Huron through Lake Simcoe and east northeastward to the southern Ottawa Valley.

A roof has been reported blown down in the Petawawa area and trees have been blown down. Wind damage has been reported in Petawawa, Pembroke, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Barrie, and Coldwater.
