BREAKING: Two-car collision closes downtown area

CORNWALL, Ontario – A spectacular accident involving two vehicles has shut down a large portion of the downtown area.

Police closed off Second Street East from Pitt Street to Augustus Street. The incident took place just after 9 p.m. at the corner of Second Street East and Sydney Street.

An officer on duty said there were no serious or life-threatening injuries. An ambulance was on site treating a woman with minor injuries.

A 12-year-old boy at the scene said it was his father and sister in one of the vehicles involved in the collision. He was not in the vehicle when it happened. The boy arrived shortly after with his mother, who was speaking to police and paramedics.

“I’m pretty scared, but my mom told me they’ll be fine,” he said.

One vehicle hit the fire hydrant on the northeast corner of the intersection. Water flooded a small portion of Second Street.

The front ends of the vehicles were completely smashed. A tow truck with a flat bed arrived to remove them.
