CORNWALL, Ontario – Mitch Gagne stepped down as general manager of the Cornwall River Kings on Thursday.
“Yes, I left the team,” said Gagne in an interview with Seaway News. “Mr. Frost offered a certain person the coaching job and I clearly stated that I would resign if that person was our coach. I do not think he was the right fit, so I walked away.“
The news first surfaced on the Cornwall River Kings Fans Facebook group.
New owner Brock Frost was forced to chime in during a social media spat started by a discontented fan who already knew about Gagne’s departure.
“Mitch quit. Plain and simple. Time to move on,” said Frost.
He confirmed that the team will be releasing a media statement in the near future to address the situation.
Frost declined to make any comment other than “Rick isn’t the coach” referring to the River Kings former head coach Rick Lalonde.
Gagne responded in a social media post that he was leaving the Ligue Nord-Americaine du Hockey franchise a few hours after social media lit up with dozens of comments.
“We didn’t see ‘eye to eye’ on something and it happens,” said Gagne.
The puck may have dropped for him with the River Kings, but Gagne didn’t drop the gloves on his way out.
“I wish nothing but the best for Brock Frost and the organization this season,” he said.
