CHEZ LIZ: A new taste in Le Village

CORNWALL, Ont. – For Lisanne and Gilles Seguin, opening a Caribbean-themed resto-bar on Montreal Road is the Canadian dream.

The Seguins held a grand opening for their new eatery, Chez Liz, on Friday (April 1) in Cornwall. Guests were entertained throughout the evening by Robert Cote from Quiet Moments.

“It’s our first restaurant venture, and it’s something we’ve always wanted to do,” said Lisanne.

Thirty-one years ago, the Seguins closed the doors to their confectionery store, The Black Jack, on Montreal Road.

“She used to say, ‘I should go there (when it was Remington’s) once a week to make Caesars,” said Gilles.

Lisanne added: “Well, be careful what you wish for. We’re here!”

The decor and menu are inspired by Caribbean culture, but traditional Cornwall cuisine like poutines and smoked meat sandwiches are served daily.

“Food will be spicy, but not too spicy. We’re opening softly with our menu to accommodate everybody,” said Lisanne.

The patio, which faces Montreal Road, is scheduled for a complete ‘tiki hut’ makeover in May.

Chez Liz Resto Bar is also a family-operated establishment.

“Our sons, Derik and Janik, are a big part of the team,” said Gilles.

The Le Village restaurant is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

“We’re more of a restaurant, than a bar. We want to be known for our food and comfy atmosphere,” said Derik.

He and his dad agreed Chez Liz can be summed up in one word: “kick-*ss.”

“Our cook makes best the sauces, and the best fries in town,” said Gilles.

The eatery (located at 101 Montreal Road) will also offer ongoing draws in partnership with Le Village neighbour, Port Theatre.
