LANCASTER, Ontario – Local home and auto insurance company The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group has announced their latest community donation of $15,000 to The Hub for Beyond 21 Foundation.

Funded through The Commonwell’s C.A.R.E (Create a Ripple Effect) program, the donation will support tutorials for adults with developmental disabilities to learn fundamental home skills including cooking, cleaning and gardening.

“One of the greatest challenges adults with developmental disabilities face is the opportunity to have the same choices and options that every person has in our community,” said Jane McLaren, Executive Director of Beyond 21. “This includes the choice to live safely, confidently, and independently in our community.  We’re thrilled that The Commonwell recognizes the potential of these members of our community and is partnering with us to help them achieve them dreams.”

The Hub for Beyond 21 Foundation enables adults with developmental disabilities in Cornwall and the surrounding area to live connected, respected and empowered to contribute to the community. Founded in 2011, the charity works with young adults aged 21 and over to help them to gain the skills and community connections they need to achieve their goals. In particular, the Commonwell’s C.A.R.E donation of $15,000 will be used to create a safe learning environment that allows adults with developmental disabilities to practice life skills in a realistic setting. This includes kitchen, cleaning, gardening and basic home repair lessons with the support of community mentors who will provide direction and guidance throughout the program.

“Our Commonwell staff and brokers live in the communities that we serve, so it’s a huge privilege to be able to support such worthy local causes,” said Tim Shauf, President and CEO of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group. “The Hub for Beyond 21 is an incredible charitable organization that empowers many young people in Cornwall to reach their goals. We are truly honoured to support them in their efforts.”

The Commonwell’s C.A.R.E (Create a Ripple Effect) program helps to fund vital charitable organizations in the Eastern Ontario communities that The Commonwell serves. Last year, the Commonwell donated over $575K to a variety of local organizations including hospitals, food banks, Big Brothers Big Sisters, youth services, Habitat for Humanity and palliative care.
