CORNWALL, Ontario – For the first time in more than 20 years, the pond at Archie’s Golf & Family Fun Centre was open to skaters.

On their Facebook page on Friday, Jan. 13, Archie’s challenged Cornwall to pack the four-acre pond this Saturday and Sunday, inviting skaters to take to the ice for $2 per person.

Cornwall was definitely up to the challenge as Archie’s parking lot as well as the pond was packed on Sunday afternoon for a sunny afternoon of skating and some pick-up hockey.

“It was the perfect storm,” said owner Carol-Ann Baxter. “The snow melted, but then it got cold, when I got out on the pond with my auger on Friday and saw that the ice was 11-inches thick I thought, we can do this.”

Opening the pond to skaters is something that Archie’s has been thinking about doing for awhile.

“It is absolutely something we would do again,” said Baxter. “Maintaining the ice on the pond is something the City used to do once upon a time. We’ve considered opening it the past couple of years, but the weather’s always been hit and miss. The way things are going, it could happen again next weekend.
