CORNWALL, Ontario – Ahmed Mafouz is the newest member of the Cornwall Nationals and the team has officially declared him as their captain for the 2017-18 season.

The professional hockey franchise held a press conference on Wednesday night at the Best Western Parkway Inn to announce the signing of the 5’11, 198 pound centre from Ottawa, Ontario who has dominated in the Federal Hockey League since its inaugural season in 2010.

The announcement was kept secret and the 50 attendees erupted into applause as he entered the room. “I woke up this morning with a big smile on my face and it’s still here so that really says something. I’m really happy to be part of this team” Mahfouz said as he took to the podium after being presented with his #19 jersey, already donning a C.

Mahfouz is a three time Commissioner’s Cup champion and has torched through the FHL, playing in 291 games and recording 592 points including 201 goals. He is known for his tenacity and his ability to find the back of the net and is the all-time FHL leader in both points and penalty minutes, with a total of 1093 PIMs.

“He is going to be a huge asset to our team and we couldn’t have asked for someone better to come in and lead us to a championship season” said Cornwall Nationals President and Owner Rodney Rivette.

The Nationals also discussed their plans for the upcoming season including 26 scheduled promotional nights which will be raising money for specified charities and organizations such as Carefor Hospice Cornwall, Baldwin House, OSPCA, Cystic Fibrosis, the Boys & Girls Club and many more.

The team also discussed its list of partners who have already come on board and also urged fans to help them promote the upcoming season through car decals and lawn signs. Rivette expressed “We love our fans and are so thankful for those who have been there from the beginning and now it’s important for us all to spread the word to our friends and neighbours so we can pack the rink this year!”

Mahfouz is the eleventh signing for the Nationals as management continues the rebuild for next season which gets underway with exhibition games beginning on October 20th and the home opener set for November 4th at the Cornwall Civic Complex.
