CORNWALL, Ontario – Ontario Power Generation opened their new control room at R.H. Saunders Generating Station Monday, Oct. 16. The new control room will overlook power production at ten hydroelectric stations along the Madawaska, Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers.

“This new control room was created to merge operations based at Chenaux GS, near Renfrew, with Saunders GS in Cornwall,” said Mike Martelli, President, Renewable Generation and Power Marketing at OPG. “These 10 stations are an important part of Ontario’s electricity system, providing clean, renewable power all year round.”

The Saunders Generating Station was said to be the best choice for the new control room due to its modern utility and communications services. The Saunders location also has the room for expansion when needed which will be beneficial in the long term. The Saunders Generating Station now manages those ten generating stations which together generate enough electricity to power 2,500,000 homes.

Ontario Power Generation generates safe, clean and reliable power for the province. More than 99% of the power generated is free of smog and carbon emissions which are very harmful to the environment.

The control room is staffed by operators 24 hours a day, every day of the week.
