AKWESASNE, The Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School is proud to announce that the school and library has received a large and generous gift from our friends at Coles Book Store in Cornwall, owned by Indigo/Chapters.

Indigo/Chapters holds a “Love of Reading” fundraiser in their stores for a local school of the store’s choice, in order to raise funds for new books.  Akwesasne was pleased to hear the local Coles store had chosen A.M.S. as their school of choice, and was even more thrilled to learn that this fundraiser was the most they’ve raised for any school!.

On Tuesday, A.M.S. Principal Denise Jackson attended the store with a few students including a Student Council Representative Xander Jacobs.  The school received a donation of $3,185.79 from the donations collected!  Customers donated to the fundraiser and community members were also able to donate online.

There was an extra surprise as well, presented by store staff. One customer had purchased a book bag to be donated to an A.M.S. student in need, and staff decided to fill the bag with their own favourite books for the school library!

The books donated were:

  • Anne of Green Gables Collection by L.M. Montgomery
  • The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer
  • Hat Trick by Irene Punt
  • Brave by Svetlana Chmakova
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
  • The Skeleton Tree by Ian Lawrence
  • The Princess in Black by Shannon Hale & Dean Hale
  • Dog Man by Dav Pilkey
  • Music is for Everybody by Jill Barber

“On behalf of A.M.S. we wish to thank Coles/Indigo and the communities of Cornwall and Akwesasne for this honour and donation,” said Principal Jackson.. “Not only will our library grow but our students’ love of reading will too. Nia:wen kowa.”
