SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – It is looking like it will be a good year for maple syrup.
Golden and delicious, South Glengarry has a history with the sweet stuff going back centuries.
The warmer weather at the end of February and in early March has meant that tree tapping season started earlier this year. The recent cold snap followed by more warm weather means that the season may well be extended.
Allister MacDonell of SummerGlen Farm said that their operation started tapping the trees on Feb. 20 this year, a week earlier than in 2017 and he is expecting this season to continue longer than last year’s.
“I hope to make 25% more syrup then last year,” MacDonell said. He explained that typically, the farm sold about 400 litres of syrup a season.
SummerGlen Farm has been producing syrup since 1784.
Much of Eastern North America has reported that this maple syrup season started unusually early.
According to the Fédération des producteurs acéricoles du Québec, a federation of Quebec’s maple syrup producers, last year was a banner year for the sappy substance with 118 million pounds of the product sold.
