CORNWALL, Ontario – The Heart and Stroke Foundation kicked started their Bike Big fundraiser at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018, to gather donations for research and treatment of heart disease and stroke.
The annual fundraiser left from the Civic Centre and traveled through the city core with loud music, cowbells and plenty of cheer.
You may have seen or heard them this weekend as many cars would honk as they passed by.
As a non-profit organization, the Heart and Stroke Foundation relies solely on donations events like the Bike Big and the Jump Rope for Heart.
The area co-ordinator Michelle O’Shaughnessy gathered teams from around Cornwall to donate and ride in the event.
“We really pride ourselves on how 51 percent of our money raised goes to research, 47 percent goes into programs, and 3 percent
goes into administration, which is pretty good for a non-profit organization,” explained Michelle before the first bike left the parking lot.
The rides through Cornwall took approximately 20 minutes with close to 29 riders on each trip with each rider donating a set amount decided by the team to the cause.
Their goal for this year’s ride which includes similar events being held in the Counties is $81,000.
On Sunday the ride continues from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with rides leaving every half hour from the Civic Centre, so come out and enjoy the spring weather.
