CORNWALL, Ontario – Alaya Riley helped Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy raise the Canadian Cancer Society flag at City Hall on Thursday, April 19.

April is Daffodil Month and the City raised the flag in recognition and support of those who are fighting or have fought cancer.

“From the city’s perspective, we know fairly few people in our community who have been impacted, maybe themselves a family member or friend,” said Mayor O’Shaughnessy. “So certainly, the contributions through the Daffodil campaign go a long way hopefully to provide some sort of relief.”

Alaya Riley is a survivor of childhood cancer and said that it is important for those who have had cancer to feel the community’s support.

“Just the whole idea that people who do have cancer they for the most part live normal lives,” she said. “Just to know they’re supported in the community is the biggest thing.”

During the month of April, volunteers from the Canadian Cancer Society have been knocking on doors selling daffodil pins and raising cancer awareness.

On April 25, the Canadian Cancer Society will be holding an evening at Boston Pizza. Reservations can be made between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and 10 percent of the proceeds raised will go to support cancer programs and support services in the community.

“We greatly appreciate the support from the City of Cornwall to recognize our efforts in the fight against cancer in our community,” said Allison St. Jean, Community Fundraising Coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society of SD&G and Prescott-Russell. “Daffodil month is an opportunity for residents of our city to play a part in advancing the cancer cause because together we are stronger”.
