CORNWALL, Ontario – Community members came together to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Saturday, July 7 at Reg Campbell Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“I just thought of doing something a little different for the community,” said Muhammad Younas, the event organizer. “That’s the first time it’s happening here…and the kids had a lot of fun today.”

The celebration had a bouncy castle, face painting, free dinner, henna tattoos, basketball games, soccer games and swimming activities. Children also had the opportunity to win prizes from Abdollah Vakily, who also gave a speech. The Cornwall Community Police Service made an appearance to part-take in the celebration.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, marks a time of fasting for Muslims. This year Ramadan ended on June 14, but Younas’ celebration was postponed until after Canada Day and the City strike due to scheduling and permit requirements.

“We were actually just thinking of having the kids get together,” said Younas. “Our fasting month is called Ramadan, so right after Ramadan we usually have stuff at my home every year. But this year I was thinking we could do something a little bigger. So that’s why I decided to do a bouncy castle, some kid activities, so they can have more fun in that day. “

Younas is thankful for the support of his volunteers to make the celebration possible.

“Mostly when you are doing an event for a first time, you depend on volunteers. They helped me a lot,” said Younas.
