CORNWALL, Ontario – Athletes from across the region swam, cycled and ran around our city from Aug. 25 to 26 during the 15th annual Cornwall Triathlon.
Rob Allen, Race Director for 10 years and a triathlete himself, believes that the weekend has a good following.
“I think it puts Cornwall on the map,” said Allen. “It’s really really cool in Cornwall that we have an inner city course, so we actually close down roads in the city and the athletes really like that. It’s traffic free.”
On Saturday, Aug. 25, youth competitors 14 and under competed in duathlons and triathlons in four different age categories. The day saw sunny skies and excited racers as every child that finished got a water bottle and a participation medal. Competitors aged seven and up received a plaque if they crossed the finish line first.
“We have between 150 and 160 kids this year, which is a sell out for us. This is the second year that we’ve sold out,” explained Allen.
The rain didn’t stop new and returning adult competitors on Sunday, Aug. 26 from showing up and cheering on their fellow racers. Some local racers from Cornwall clubs showed their abilities, as well as racers from as far as London and Burglington, ON.
“For the adults we have five different events, and two of them have been sold out for a month. We have the most we’ve ever had, so it’s a record number of (adult) participants as well,” said Allen.
Registration prices ranged from $20 to $120 depending on the age and race.
“We have such a great core of volunteers that are really appreciated,” said Allen, explaining how the event is made a possibility.
