CORNWALL, Ontario – According to the Cornwall Community Police Service’s (CCPS) Crime Plot map, there were 70 break-ins in the City of Cornwall from June 1 to Aug. 30, 2018.

“Many of these break-ins take place during the night hours while residents are sleeping,” CCPS stated in a press release on their website.

CCPS posted the following recommendations on their website:

• Concentrate on doors and windows to help make your home less vulnerable. All windows and doors should be properly locked and secured.
• Maintain normal lighting when not at home and use a timer to switch various household lights on and off.
• Use adequate outside lighting. Motion sensor lighting is a great way to startle a potential thief.
• Do not place keys under outdoor mats.
• Keep garage doors locked and ladders inside or secured out of sight.
• Trim bushes to eliminate hiding areas.
• Avoid leaving notes on your door (i.e. back in 10 minutes); thieves will know you are away.
• Discontinue mail, newspapers delivery, when leaving for an extended period of time.
• Report suspicious people or activity in your neighbourhood to police.
