Urban Planet will have a relocation sale from Jan. 2

CORNWALL, Ontario – Urban Planet, which opened its doors at the Eastcourt Mall in October of 2013, is hoping to relocate to the Cornwall Square within the next month.

“We’re really excited,” said Sara Schmidt, Store Manager. “We are looking forward to starting a new adventure in a new location…the whole team that is here will be relocating with the store as well.”

“It will be nice to be located in the heart of town. Some of my management team has worked at the Cornwall Square in the past…I think that’s why we have such a positive outlook about it,” added Schmidt.

Urban Planet currently occupies a 30,000 sq. ft. standalone store. According to Schmidt, the store will move into the second floor of the mall in the space that was previously occupied by Sears. Although Schmidt could not confirm an exact move in or opening date, she is hoping that the process will be quick.

“(We) don’t have an official date but are hoping for the end of January,” said Schmidt.

The store relocation contradicts previous reports about the future of the old Sears portion of the mall. In March Cornwall Seaway News learned from Cornwall Square managing staff that that 96,000 sq. ft. portion of the mall was to be torn down for the development of a residential building. Similarly, the Economic Development Department shared a potential concept rendering of what the Cornwall Square could look like with a residential building at the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) in September of 2018. These plans preceded the estimated $8.4 million sale of the Cornwall Square which was announced in October of 2018.

Executive Director of Groupe Quint, Melissa Boyer, confirmed that Groupe Quint officially acquired the Cornwall Square on Dec. 10, 2018. She was unable to comment on future plans for the property, apart from confirming the company’s desire to occupy vacant storefronts with new businesses. The mall was previously owned by Partners REIT.

Prior to the move, Urban Planet officially launched their week-long, relocation sale on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Many of their items can be purchased for under $10.

“We have been very successful…we are lucky we have so many enthusiastic customers,” said Schmidt in regard to the sale.

Schmidt said she has seen thousands of customers over the past two days and is looking forward to offer clients new, trendy items upon relocating.

“We will of course have our whole new spring and summer line, we will still our same great deals and promotions and those are all great things for our customers to look forward,” said Schmidt.
