LANCASTER, Ontario – Families were invited to take part in reading activities at the Lancaster SDG Library branch on Saturday, Jan. 19 between 10:30 a.m. and noon.

“Lancaster branch got an early start at celebrating Family Literacy Day,”  said Donna McMillan of the SDG Library. “Special guest South Glengarry Deputy Mayor Lyle Warden entertained the children by reading Stuck by Oliver Jeffers in his animated and entertaining voice. The children then tried their luck on the ABC Scavenger Hunt and at the Literacy Fish Pond.  It was a stimulating and fun Saturday morning at the Lancaster branch.”

The SDG Library promoted celebrating Family Literacy Day early which falls on Sunday, Jan. 27 this year, reinforcing the importance and value of reading in a child’s life.

Nik Anderson, mom of three, enjoys reading to her children and understands the importance of literacy.

“It’s so much closeness…we play video games with them but it’s not the same,” said Anderson.

Anderson and her family are new to South Glengarry as of 2018 but said that her oldest daughter wasted no time registering for a library card.

“We just moved here in July and we have probably been here to the library more than anywhere else,” said Anderson. “When we first came to go house hunting, my oldest, the only thing she wanted was that whenever we moved there needed to be a library close…it made her feel at home.”

A family favourite of Anderson’s is a book called Milk. Anderson said that reading together with her children leads to inside jokes and irreplaceable bonding.

“It’s just heartwarming to see them come to the library and read,” said McMillan. “Then they realize how important the library is and learn about all the services it has.”
