CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall has announced that it will be the host of the 2020 Ontario Curling Championships.

The Men’s and Women’s tournaments, known as the Tankard and the Tournament of Hearts respectively will be taking place at the Cornwall Civic Complex. Each tournament will see eight teams facing off against each other.

“It’s an ideal venue for one of Ontario’s premier events,” said Stephen Chenier, Executive Director of CurlON. “We’ve had ample success in the past with combined Men’s and Women’s provincial events, and Cornwall is a proven hotbed of curling in eastern Ontario.”

According to Cornwall Tourism, the event is tentatively scheduled to take place between Jan. 28 and Feb. 2, 2020.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase our city and our great facilities to the rest of Ontario,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement. “Our local curling community has a very active membership and I know that will help make this event a huge success.”

Tourism hopes that the event will generate $2 million in revenue for Cornwall and local businesses. The Cornwall Curling Club, which is on property adjacent to the Complex, hosts curling tournaments throughout the year including the Shorty Jenkins Classic.

“We’re looking forward to working with CurlON and the City of Cornwall to host the provincial championships,” said Cornwall Curling Club member Kevin Baker. “It will be a chance to see some great curling action right in our own backyard. We’re confident local sports fans and businesses will support the event and come out to watch the action.”
