UPDATE: The 41st annual Tim Hortons Bowl for Kid’s Sake raised $67,500 for the Cornwall chapter of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters.
There were 170 teams and 850 bowlers who participated this year.
“We’re extremely grateful for the community’s support for our largest annual fundraiser,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Ron Graham. “Both our Honourary Chairs did a fantastic job of helping us promote the 2019 event.”
Tim Horton’s was the title sponsor of the event once again this year, with other sponsors being Leon’s, Dr. Navaneelan, Cornwall Toyota and Shoeless Joe’s.
The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall made a $5,062 contribution to the event with several other local service clubs also participating and getting pledges.
CORNWALL, Ontario – Approximately 145 teams rolled into Olympia Bowl and Nativity Bowling on Saturday, Feb. 2 for Tim Hortons Bowl for Kids Sake.
Community members of all ages showed their support for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall and District, each team taking part in a fast-paced, high energy game of bowling.
“Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. It’s going well,” said Ron Graham, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Graham said that this year, the organization was hoping to raise close to last year’s total of $66,000.
“We have done some rough tallies and we are about halfway there (to last year’s total fundraised),” said Graham. “It’s well organized. I have to thank all of my staff and everyone here. They’re doing a great job.”
Graham said that volunteers were actively recruiting ‘Bigs’ during the event.
“I believe we are up to about 60 mentors right now but we still have over 100 children on the waiting list,” said Graham. “Funding (raised) goes towards our mentoring one-on-one.”
This year, the two Chairpeople of the event included Chief Danny Aikman and Betty Wheeler.
“Chief Aikman was on our board before…so we thought it would be a good fit, to bring him back and be our Chair. In the Counties we have Betty Wheeler as our chair out there…she brings in over $5,000 each year by herself,” said Graham.
Graham is hoping this event will bring awareness of the services offered at Big Brothers Big Sisters and get more individuals involved.
“We still have Chesterville tomorrow!” said Graham, where approximately 15 teams are expected.“Our goal is to recruit more in the United Counties and get more ‘Bigs’ involved.”
