CORNWALL, Ontario – Striking workers at Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocers (YIG) have voted to end their work action by a margin of 76 per cent.

After a meeting taking place at Ramada Inn, workers voted in favour of the latest offer from their employer.

The proposed deal offered a pay increase, back pay and a signing bonus. Members gained an immediate six per cent increase for top rate part-time workers. Contract terms were also shortened from six to three years, meaning members will be able to negotiate further improvements in 18 months.

“Members displayed incredible courage and solidarity over three, cold winter months,” said Roland Lapins, Regional Director of UFCW Canada Local 1006A. “Our members showed Loblaw that they won’t be bullied into a bad deal – that they are willing to fight for fairness. We look forward to getting back to the negotiating table in 2020.”

Local 1006A represents approximately 150 workers at Baxtrom’s YIG.

“We are very happy the strike has come to an end and we can get back to doing what we do best, providing the residents of our local communities with their grocery needs,” said John Baxtrom. “At Baxtrom’s Independent everything is back to normal,  we are open for business, and we would like to thank the community for their support.”
