CORNWALL, Ontario – The Tri-County Literacy Council (TCLC) is offering one-on-one tutoring for those interested in expanding their horizons on a wide range of topics.

“Students can have a variety of goals,” said Carol Anne Maloney, Literacy Instructor at TCLC. “Getting your GED of high school diploma for example.”

Alison Tucker is one of the volunteer tutors currently working with students through the TCLC program.

“A lot of it is confidence building,” Tucker explained. She is currently helping a woman who has immigrated to Canada on improving her English for her citizenship test.

Students interested in participating in the program are asked to call TCLC at 613-932-7161 to setup an interview. After the interview, the students needs and goals will then be assessed.

“There is a commitment that is needed,” said Tucker. “They would need to commit to meeting four hours a week at a time that is convenient to both the student and volunteer.”

Tucker explained that the program is a great opportunity not just for students but for potential volunteers as well.

“I had the time, and now I’m using that time o do something I really enjoy,” she said. “I have a background in nursing and teaching and it can be very relaxing. “
