LONG SAULT, Ontario – Irish tunes could be heard coming from South Stormont Township on Saturday, March 16 during the Fish & Fry St. Patrick’s Day Dance.
Event organizer David Smith said he was hoping to see a crowd just shy of 100 people sporting their green, Celtic attire and dancing shoes.
“I love doing this sort of stuff. I was in the bar business for a long time…and I’ve been fundraising since I moved here in 1985…I miss that, so now I have all the tools. You have got to stay busy,” said Smith, who was happy to host another dinner and dance in the community.
Live music was anticipated by a few members of the band Kilts, Riffs and Spurs throughout the evening. Attendees could take part in dinner and a dance for $20, or just a night of dancing for $10. Part of the proceeds from the evening will be donated to the municipality’s Meals on Wheels.
“We donate the money to the South Stormont Senior Support Centre for Meals on Wheels,” said Smith. “It’s local Meals on Wheels…I always knew Meals on Wheels existed, but I never really knew much about them until I went there and watched the trays going out of there, and they really need support…Meals on Wheels, they’re not just about delivering food…they can go to the house and also sort of check on (the individuals who ordered).”
“It’s a really good program and we take it for granted; it gets overlooked,” added Smith, who said March is Meals on Wheels month.
Smith thanked the Township’s Lions Club for all of their continued support cooking and preparing, all event volunteers and every attendee who had a fun evening.
Smith is looking to the future with many ideas for the area, including bringing a hockey team to Long Sault and organizing the community’s Relay For Life activities in August.
