CORNWALL, Ontario – Multiple local officials recently helped to raise awareness for Meals on Wheels.

Mayor Bernadette Clement, City of Cornwall CAO Maureen Adams, Councillor Glen Grant and Glen Stor Dun Lodge Administrator Norm Quenneville all volunteered to help Meals on Wheels make their local deliveries as a part of 2019 March for Meals Community Champions Week.

“We were thrilled to receive their support.  Meals on Wheels is such an important program,” said Meals on Wheels Coordinator Andree-Anne Morin. “It allows seniors or persons with disabilities to remain in their own homes when they are faced with limitations in daily living activities due to illness, ageing, memory loss, etc.  Many seniors live alone and do not have family or neighbours to help shop for them or prepare meals.  Meals on Wheels also gives families peace of mind knowing that someone is looking out for their loved one.”

The annual March for Meals raises awareness about the importance of healthy nutrition for adults over 60 years of age and adults with disabilities.

“We are thankful to our 2019 Community Champions for stepping up in support of Meals on Wheels,” said Deborah Simon, CEO of Ontario Community Support Association.  “Last year alone, over 3 million of these essential meals were handed out to Ontarians.  It is important to note that government funding covers only part of the cost and that the rest is made up of charitable dollars and client fees.  Most importantly, Meals on Wheels volunteers perform a valuable security check for isolated clients – a volunteer may be the only person a client interacts with on a given day.  Those visits enable people to live healthier, independent lives in their own homes.”

Last year, Meals on Wheels delivered over 28,000 meals in Cornwall. The meals are prepared by the staff at Glen Store Dun Lodge and delivered with the help of 200 volunteers.

Meals on Wheels is a United Way agency.
