CORNWALL, Ontario – An engaged audience indulged in an array of short films for women, by women on Saturday, March 30 during LUNAFEST, hosted by Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) For Women of SDG&A.

“It’s going really really well,” said Angela Vinet, SASS Executive Director. “The crowd is super engaged and the movies are going over exceptionally well…they’re movies made for women, by women, so it’s a series of short clips on different topics…all encompassing women’s lives.”

Vinet explained that SASS strived to host LUNAFEST about four years ago but the evening was essentially snowed out. Staff decided to bring back the event this year, and with clear weather and an entertained crowd, considered it a success.

LUNAFEST, which began in 2000, is a travelling film festival that celebrates women in film and showcases films by women. The event can be held in any community to raise funds for a local women’s cause. Vinet said this year the films covered serious topics including immigration, homosexuality and coming out, as well as lighter topics like female unity and friendships we value.

Tickets to the event were $40 per person. Throughout the evening, a group of talented performers graced the stage, singing, playing instruments as well as dancing. Attendees also had the chance to participate in a live and silent auction.

SASS thanked Community Action Network Against Abuse (CANAA) for sponsoring sweet treats, as well as HollisWealth, Elizabeth Taylor Financial Advisor and Carol Bennett Bray CFP for sponsoring food throughout the evening.

“Proceeds will go towards running some of our groups, like our SASS socials, our empowerment camp for women and young girls, as well as some of our art therapy group,” said Vinet.
