CORNWALL, Ontario – Canada Learning Code’s Cornwall Chapter is inviting girls aged 9-12 to take part in the 6th Annual Girls Learning Code Day on May 11. The interactive workshop will be hosted at the Cornwall Public Library. Local Chapter Lead, Kelly Bergeron will be onsite during the event, with guest instructor, Josée Gagné. This year’s theme for #glcCodeDay is innovation and entrepreneurship.
Girls will be challenged to think about problems they want to solve, experiences or products they wish existed, and use code to build their own websites for their solutions. They will be joined by their parents or guardians for a fun-filled afternoon of discovery and development.
“This is the Cornwall Chapter’s third year of hosting this event and we couldn’t be more excited to focus on entrepreneurship. Empowering youth has always been our goal, and through these events, our youth gain skills they can use all while having a blast,” said Kelly Bergeron, Chapter Lead for Cornwall.
In addition to learning technical skills, a focus on entrepreneurship is important to help young girls develop the skills needed to be successful including: effective problem solving, learning from failure, allowing kids to make decisions, fostering creativity, fostering leadership.
These are important to develop at an early age as the gender-gap persists today in the fast-growing tech sector. Female founders only received 2.2% of $130 billion in venture capital funding in 2018. The number of deals completed by female founders is growing, though the percentage of money going to these companies remains stagnant as the total amount of VC investment increases (PitchBook).

Through our fintech accelerator program based in Canada, we remain committed to providing investment and mentorship to female founders from coast to coast.
