CORNWALL, Ontario – The Akwesasne Family Wellness program organized the first local event to recognize missing and murdered aboriginal women in Cornwall on Sunday, May 5, 2019.
To honour the missing and murdered aboriginal women, red dresses and clothing was worn by attendees and hung outside of the event’s venue, the Port Theatre.
The event began with a memorial walk from the Cornwall clock tower to the Port Theatre.
It was followed by addresses in memory of those lost and a musical performance by Bear Fox. The event was MC’d by actor Wayne Baker.
The event recognized at least 35 Akwesasne residents who have gone missing or have been murdered including Kenny Leaf, Lori Martin-Lazore, Hattie Bero, Suzanne Cook, Margaret White and more.
“For us, we don’t have exact numbers, but they are high,” said Kathleen Terrance of the Akwesasne Family Wellness Program. “We have three men who are missing and we are giving a voice to them and all of those who are missing.”
