CORNWALL, Ontario – Part of the waterfront bike path in Cornwall was dedicated to the memory of Chuck Charlebois on Friday, May 10, 2019.
The section, now known as the Chuck Charlebois Path, is marked by two memorial arches at either end of the section; one at St. Lawrence College, and one just west of Cornwall Harbour.
The dedication was made in recognition of Charlebois’ commitment to growing and developing Cornwall’s East End, also known as Le Village.
“A lot of the seeds that are growing today, were planted by Chuck Charlebois,” said Todd Lihou, Centretown Coordinator with Heart of the City.
Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement said that it was fitting that this particular section of the bike path be used to memorialize Charlebois.
“Our path is the best way to access our waterfront,” she said. “The east part of Cornwall was in his heart at all times. It is appropriate that we name his part of the path in his honour.”
The memorial arches were designed by Pierre Giroux and installed by Claremont-Rozon.
A memorial plaque will also be installed to help preserve the memory of Chuck Charlebois.
Charlebois’ wife Suzanne Charlebois thanked the City of Cornwall and all of those involved for this tribute to Chuck’s memory.
“We are very grateful that Chuch was aware of this and saw renderings of the plans while he was with us,” she said. “It means so much that this was done befoore he left us.”
Charlebois sat on City Council three times between 1986-1988, 1992 to 1994 and 1995 to 1997. He passed away on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 at the age of 69 after a long illness.
